RailTel to expand operations

RailTel Corporation of India Ltd, a 100 per cent subsidiary of the Indian Railways, is expanding its operations on a large-scale.
"We are taking up many initiatives to help public and industry benefit from our technology and inherent advantages," KK Bajpeyee, Managing Director, told reporters.
RailTel is building state the art multimedia network using Synchronous Digital Hiearchy (SDH) technology.
RailTel would complete laying of 42,000 km of optical fire cable with SDH technology, he added.
By using the railway infrastructure, RailTel would also provide VPN connectivity to 38 cities in the country. "This would help medium and largescale enterprises in having better connectivity," Bajpeyee said.
Other initiatives to providing unreserved ticketing in advance, setting up of cyberdages in selected railway stations, he added.
RailTel had a capital inlay of Rs 190 crore this year. Over last three years it had invested over 600 crore. With about 500 employees on rolls, it has many franchises to work with, Bajpeyee said.
