Railtel all set to offer internet connection in trains

Railtel Corporation of India Limited (RCIL), an undertaking of the Ministry of Railways for infrastructure development is all set to offer internet connectivity in moving trains by next year.
Speaking to reporters here yesterday, R C Sharma, managing director, RCIL, said the Railway Ministry would soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Canadian firm to provide the internet service. The test trials for providing the service was conducted between Tughlakabad and Faridabad railway stations recently and the service would be first provided in one of the Shatabdi trains once the agreement is reached, he added. Sharma earlier inaugurated RCIL's first Network Operations Centre in Tamilnadu at the Chepauk station.
Referring to the laying of optic fibre cables along rail tracks by RCIL, established in September 2000, he said the corporation proposed to cover the entire 62,000 km long railway line network. in another three years.
To a query about laying of optic fibre cable in Tamilnadu, he said laying of cables was on in various sectors of Southern Railway including Chennai-Madurai-Tirunelveli-Nagercoil and
Coimbatore-Erode-Tiruchi sectors.
