July 2003, The Financial Express
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) plans to provide cellular, GSM (global system for mobile communications)-based PCOs on trains. This was announced by BSNL chairman and managing director Prithipal Singh on the sidelines of signing up of an MoU (memorandum of understanding) with Railtel on Wednesday.
The MoU was signed by Railtel managing director AK Chopra and BSNL CMD Prithipal Singh. As per the agreement, both the organisations would meet each other's bandwidth requirement from their network on mutually agreed terms.
As per this agreement, both the organisations can synergise their operations, said Mr Singh. While BSNL can use optic fibre cable (OFC) network of Railtel to widen its reach in areas where BSNL network is not present, it will use the Railtel network as a back-up in areas where BSNL has its network. This is aimed at providing seamless services.
The MoU provides for lease of bandwidth by Railtel on specified routes to BSNL wherever feasible as per BSNL's requirement on the golden quadrilateral routes connecting the four metros.
BSNL would use the Railtel network for meeting its rural telephony requirements.
